5 Album covers for ' Blue Eyed Soul'

backtoblack2.jpg

  • this album cover has positioned Amy Winehouse in the middle of the frame, this tells the audience that this is the person that is singing within the album and shows her important within the album.
  • they have tilted her head slightly to the left this connotes that she is quite innocent and angelic and this is also reinforced by the white dress because the white connotes virgin and innocence, therefore making the audience think that Amy (the women in the image) is also innocent.
  • she is sitting on a stool that is commonly seen in schools and because she is sitting in front of a white board it connotes that she is quite young and young females within the media are usually seen as nice innocent girls. Also the third middle party may have her this way because they want her to attract the target audience of teenage girls.
  • with the little white dress Amy is wearing gold jewellery this connotes that she has a rebellious side and the leopard print shoes connote that she can be quite wild, this attracts the target audience because they will be interested in Amy Winehouse because she is not boring.
  • the copy used is a simple colour of white which again connotes innocence and it also stands out from the black background and the style reminds me of a barcode which is interesting and therefore attracts the audience.
  • the target audience is clearly teenage girls this is clear because Amy Winehouse is wearing fashionable clothing therefore attracting the audience.
  • the tag line 'back to black' is interesting and is also shown by Amy because she also has her back to black, therefore making it interesting.
  • because Amy is leaving slightly forward we can slightly see her chest, therefore the representation of gender within this album cover is that females use their body to sell album covers.

  • the album cover is in black and white, this connotes that the album will have quite a retro feel to it and that it will be different to everything that is out at the moment.
  • they have positioned her with her head pointing down therefore it connotes that she is quiet and innocent and because her hand is touching her top, it connotes that she is comforting herself therefore telling the audience that the album won't be very upbeat.
  • she is wearing clothes that look as though they are from the sixties and her hair style also shows this, this tells the audience the style of music that they will be listening to.
  • the copy of the artists name is in a script style which qives the album a sense of personal touch by Duffy and makes it seem as though she has signed it for her audience, which would attract the audience.
  • the second copy for the word ' ROCKFERRY' is bolder and stands out more which connotes that the whole album will be bold and interesting.
  • the colour of the copy is also white like Amy Winehouse album and it also stands out very well from the black and grey background and draws the audience's attention to the album.
  • Duffy looks fragile on this cover of this album therefore representing the female gender as weak and fragile.

Joss.Stone.Mind.Body.Soul.CD.Cover.jpg

  • the colour is very bright on this album cover and the colours of purple and blues connote mystery and sexuality, this would attract the target audience of teenage girls because purple is a feminine colour therefore the audience would be attracted to the album.
  • Joss Stone is in the center of the frame therefore telling the audience that she is the female that is singer within the album and also showing her importance for the whole album.
  • her features really stand out from the purple back ground connoting that she is bold and very obvious and also that her music is very bold.
  • the copy for 'mind body and soul' is a pale pink colour which stands out from the background and makes it a focal theme of the album cover a long with Joss Stone.
  • the copy for 'Joss Stone' is also a pale pink but a different type of pink which tells the audience that the two copies do not connect and that they are seperate for the alum.
  • the colours fit well with the genre because they are very soulful and go well with nature which is one of the themes of soul.

adele19.jpg

  • adele is not in the centre of the frame but she is still the focal theme of the album because she is the dominant face on the album therefore it tells the audience that she is very important within the album and tells us that she is the singer within the album.
  • the copy is white and really stands out from the black background and because it is positioned right next to Adele's face we make the connection that the person on the album is called Adele and therefore the audience feel as though they know her.
  • the second copy is a pale pink colour and is positioned right next to the first copy and it stands out from the black background but is not as dominant as the first copy which connotes the first piece of information is more important to the audience and the album that than the first.
  • because we can only see part of Adele's face it creates and enigma of why is she hiding her face and what does she have to hide, it also creates a sense of mystery
  • the way Adele is looking down is very feminine and highlights her beauty and represents her as a stereotypical female that is interested in her make-up and looks.
  • it is unconventional because stereotypically the female is usually showing of a part of her body to sell the album and Adele is not showing anything / any part of her body.

nelly-furtado-loose.jpg

  • Nelly Furtado is positioned to the right of the center of the album, but because she is the only person on the album cover, we know that she is dominant within the album and it tells us that she is the singer.
  • the colours used a pink, red and white, these colours are all very bright and feminine which connotes that Nelly is very in touch with her feminine side and that she is happy to be a women.
  • she is wearing white and this connotes innocence and femininity, this helps the audience to connect with her and makes her seem as though she will be a good role model for teenage girls.
  • she is wearing a necklace and wearing a lot of make-up, this is very sterotypical of the female gender within album covers be because she is showing that she is bothered about the way that she looks and the way she comes across.
  • the copy for 'loose' is a very free style of text it looks as though Nelly draw it therefore connoting that it is a very fun and informal and loose album
  • the NELLY FURTADO is bold and is white which stands out from the bright background and makes the copy bold and important on the album.
  • the facial expression of Nelly is very seductive and reinforces the stereotype that women use their body to sell the album.

further music video analysis

Representation - the representation of the female within the music videos were all very similar, the females all come across as being very feminine therefore really into their looks and also as though there looks are all they care about. We see this because within the music videos all the girls are very pretty and all have their make-up done with their hair done, this re-enforces the stereotype that women only care about their image. The third middle party have represented the females in this way because they feel as though this will attract the target audience and will allow the audience to connect with the artist and will make the audience want to be like every girl in the music video. This also reinforces the ideology, that women use their body instead of their mind to rule over men, this is shown in the music videos because all the girls are wearing tight/short clothing which also connotes that they fit into the stereotype of a slag.

Narrative - within the Joss Stone video the narrative follows a parallel structure, this is because it follows the view of her and the lead male, this helps to show their emotions about the situation to the audience clearly. Within the music video there is a clear villain which fits into Propps narrative theory, the hero in the video is Joss Stone herself, this challenges the stereotype of men being the dominant hero. The video starts off with Joss Stone leaving, this created an enigma of what could have happened.
There is not really a clear narrative within Paloma Faith's video because it is just them dancing, therefore their is no story/plot to it.
V V Brown's music video follows a linear narrative and tells the story through her eyes only because the male does not need a voice/view, this is unconventional because usually we see it through the males eyes because stereotypically men are more dominant. The dear villain in this video is the man because he is cheating on her.

Audience - i feel as though most of the audience would watch all of these music video's for personal relationships because it would show women how to handle a break up or how to get over somebody therefore it would connect with the audience, it could also be used for personal identity, the audience may recognise what is happening in the music video is also happening in their real life therefore they could learn how to behave from this. The only music video that could not do any of this would be Paloma Faith's video because she only dances and the audience can not relate to someone just dancing, but it will entertain the audience.

Genre - all of my music video's fit into the genre of 'Blue Eyed Soul' we know this because they have all used similar codes and conventions within their music videos such as, feminine clothing, nice make-up, instruments shown in the video etc.

5 music video analysis continued..

My fourth music video that i decided to analyse was Joss Stone " you had me", http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opwudiDgv1E
Mise en scene - the male is introduced in the video before the singer (joss stone) this tells us that he is going to be an important part within the story for the video, the camera shot used to introduce him is a medium long which connote that he is not te most important person in the video, this idea is also backed up by the fact that he is never center in the frame. He is wearing black casual clothes which connote that he is very masculine and hard. Joss stone is then introduced when the camera straight cuts to a long shot of her, this tells us that she is important because we are seeing all of her, she is wearing jeans and a t-shirt which is very casual and connotes that she is not bothered about her appearance, there is then another straight cut edit to a close-up of her face, this again highlight her importance to the song and also allows the audience to really see who she is.
The pace of the edits is changed continually throughout the whole of the music video, at the start the pace is quite slow so that it can introduce the characters of the music video easily, then the pace of the edits becomes faster as the song begins to become faster.
the setting is in the city in different places such as, the street, an apartment all of these places connotes and create a sense of realism and make the audience believe what is going on.
The genre of this music video is soul, we know this becuase of the way that Joss Stone is dressed because it is quite hippi and soulful.
The target audience for this music video is clearly young girls, we know this there is an attractive male in the video which would attract the girls and also the clothes that joss stone is wearing would also attract females becuase they would be interested in picking up new fashion ideas and they would also appreciate the lyrics that are being sang about in the song.
the story is that Joss stone is unhappy with her relationship and that she has decided to leave her boyfriend becuase she feel as though he is messing with her mind.

The fifth music video i decided to look at was Paloma Faith "upside down", http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKIM3SkR45I
Mise en Scene - the costume that Paloma is wearing is very brightly coloured, which connote fun and happiness and draw the audiences attention straight to Paloma which tells the audience that she is the most important part of the music video and tells us that she is the singer/artist. There are male dancers in the background but we do not really see their faces which tells us that they are irrelevant to the video and draws our attention back to paloma faith who is always in the center of the frame connoting that she is of high important to the music video.
There are plenty of close-ups used in the music video and most of them are used on Paloma Faith' face, this highlights her importance and shows the emotions that she is trying to convey through her facial expressions, there are also plenty of long shots used, this is to show off Paloma's amazing outfit and so that the audience can see what is happening with everybody in the shot.
The editing is quite slow paced this is because it fits the pace of the soulful music and fits the pace of the dancing that is in the video, which allows the focus to still be on Paloma and the song.
The genre of the song is soul, we know this becuase of the pace of the song and becuase of the very brightly coloured outfit that Paloma is wearing.
The target audience is clearly teenaged girls we know this becuase of the attractive male dancers, which would most certainly attract the young female and also Paloma's outfit would also attract girls because they would find it very interesting whereas boys would not be at all bothered by the outfit or male backing dancers.
There is not really a story to the video because it is just Paloma Faith and men dancing therefore it does not have or need a storyline/narrative.

5 music video analysis

My first music video analysis was for the video of "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg_7TL5PAzA.
Mise en scene- Green clothing, waist coat and 3 quarter length trousers, due to my research i found out these clothes would have been fashionable for the time of the music videos release. The colour green connotes nature and this fits well with Natasha Bedingfield's hippi style.
Natasha is usually in the center of the frame, this shows that she is very important within the video and tells the audience that she is the singer.
Natasha's make-up is very natural, this connotes nature and natural beauty and allow the audience to see a clear view of Natasha.
There is a medium shot which introduces Natasha within the music video and the camera pans as it follows Natasha into the lift, there is then a straight cut edit to a close-up shot of Natasha, this again shows the audience that she is going to be very important within the video abd that she is the artist/singer.
She is not positioned straight on to the camera, she is slightly facing the left this connotes flirtation.
There is then a medium shot which introduces the male into the video he is wearing a green jacket with dark clothes, the dark clothes connote that he is very masculine and the medium shot connotes that he will play a role within the music video. There is then a straight cut edit to a medium shot of Natasha and the male standing in the lift together this connotes that something is going to happen between them.
There are a lot of close-up shots of Natasha singing, this continues to highlight to the audience that she is the artist and to highlight her beauty. Natasha then has another outfit on this is a dress and is cream this connotes feminity.
Editing - the video uses straight cut edits, at the start the edits are fast then as the songs pace speeds up so does the pace of the edits which keeps audiences attention on the song and the lyrics.
Genre - soul - because there are many camera shots of nature and of the artist i feel as though these elements connote soul becuase soul music is often connected to nature.
The target audience is clearly yound females we know this becuase there is an attractive male in the video, this would attract young females becuase they would be attracted to them. Also the costume of Natasha would attract young females because they might want to see the latest fashion.

Secong music video i analysed was V V Brown "Shark in the Water" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPQlxHWsemI
Mise en Scene - V V Brown is wearing a black dress with some colour on it, she has her hair down with a little black hat this connotes that she take care of her appearance and that she is feminine. The little black dress connotes depression and the little hat also connotes depression and upset becuase it is the style of hat you wear at a funeral, the small amount of colour connotes a small amount of happiness.
V V Brown is sat in a restaurant this connotes realism and helps with the story. she is posititoned in the center of the frame which connotes that she is the most important part of the video and the medium camera shot establishes that she is the artist/singer.
The close-up camera shot is most commonly used this is to show the facial expressions of the characters within the music video and to help the audience understand the emotions of characters within the video which helps to tell the story within the video.
There are also long shots used when showing the story between the other characters this connotes that the characters in the long shots are not as important as the female in the close-ups.
The edits are slow paced straight cut, this is so the audience focus on the story being told and so they concentrate on the song.
The genre of the music is soul, we know this becuase there are views of nature.
Target audience is yound females we know this because there is an atractive male in the video and fashion is also focused upon in the video.

The third music video i analysed was "rehab" by amy winehouse, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LTPRJqt2z4
Mise en scene- coloueful dressing gown this connotes a relaxed atmosphere Amy Winehouse is also wearing a lot of make-up this connotes that she is interested in the way she looks and thats she is very feminine. Amy is positioned in the center of the frame this connotes that she is very important within the music video and that she is the singer/artist.
The camera shot most commonly used is the close-up this highlights the important characters and also allows the audience to read the emotions of the people within the music video.
The editing is slow paced this is because the song is also slow paced therefore they want the edits to match the pace of the song so that the audience concentrate of the song.
The genre of the song is soul we know this because there is a female within the video and there is also a wide range if soulful instruments used in the video which communicate the genre of soul to the audience.
The target audience is young teenagers we know this becuase of the style of clothes that Amy is wearing is quite revealing which adults would not like and the make-up and hair would be of the style teenagers would find fashionable therefore attracting teenagers.
